One of the most impressive books on Asia for me is a book on Japanese society and culture, titled Kioto tai nguam doisuthep (in Thai). The author is Dr. Nithi Iosiwong who is the most famous historian in Thailand. Although he is not a Japanologist, he wrote the excellent book after he had stayed in Kyoto for several months. The book taught me what area studies should aim at.
